Be Allergy Smart: Ask Questions Before You Dine

It’s up to you to ask the right questions before and after you eat at a restaurant. Restaurants don’t have to list the major food allergens for your meal.

Do Your Homework First

Check the restaurant database at the Food Allergy Research & Education web site. It’s a good list of “allergy-aware” restaurants. Peruse the web sites for allergen lists to help you choose your food selections wisely.

Don’t hesitate to call the restaurant to speak to the manager or head chef. Remember that non-peak restaurant hours are usually from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Try to call during that time. Managers and chefs will have more time to talk with you. Save both of you time by having a list of questions handy.

Be Your Own Advocate: Smart Questions to Ask

Ask pointed, not generic questions. You want specifics. Don’t just ask if the restaurant understands how to deal with food allergies. You will get a yes or no answer. Ask if the french fries are cooked in the same oil as the fish; and if so, if there is another basket of oil designated for fish and seafood allergic customers.

For many food allergic people, the tiniest food proteins can cause anaphylaxis, making cross-contamination a very scary possibility. This is especially true when you are allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, milk and soy. Don’t assume that one small reaction a year ago won’t be a severe reaction today. There’s no such thing as a stupid question when your life may be in danger.

  • If you question a food, ask to see its label.
  • Ask if there is more than one food prep area to reduce chances of cross-contamination between ingredients. Will your peanut/tree nut free pancakes be cooked on the same grill as the multi-grain pancakes containing walnuts?
  • Are prepackaged foods prepared in trusted facilities that are free of some or all of the top 8 allergens? Specifically, are the bread sticks packaged in the same facility as the chocolate muffins? If they are, and are not made and packaged in a designated allergen-free area, you run the risk of cross-contamination.
  • Are employees allowed to bring snacks and lunches into the restaurant? What’s the policy on washing hands after break or lunch to reduce cross-contamination.

Communicate and Reward

Ask questions when you sit down at a restaurant like Il Greco Meet the manager. Meet the chef. If your server seems aloof and makes you nervous, ask for another server. Don’t feel like your questions are a waste of time. When in doubt, walk out.

Don’t forget the accolades when restaurant personnel go the extra mile to accommodate your food allergies. Let the staff know that they went above and beyond. Show your appreciation by tipping well and letting others know. Write reviews online and help a stranger be forewarned and forearmed before they dine out.

5 Weirdest Pizza Toppings

Are you bored of cheese and pepperoni? People all over the world like to get creative with their pizza toppings, and they’ve come up with some pretty weird stuff. If you’re feeling adventurous, try some of these five weird toppings on your next pizza.

Squid ink

Squids use their ink to hide from predators, but to some humans, squid ink is a tasty pizza topping. This pizza is sometimes called “black pizza” due to the colour of the ink. While you might assume that the ink would make the pizza taste fishy, that’s not the case. The cheese on top of it is a much stronger flavour, and hides the taste of the ink.

Is the extra cash in your wallet weighing you down? Caviar pizza can fix that problem for you. A restaurant in New York sells a caviar pizza for $1000. Why does it cost so much? Caviar is an expensive delicacy, made of salted fish eggs, though it’s usually eaten as a spread, not a pizza topping.

Gold flakes

If you still have some money left after trying caviar pizza, try putting some gold flakes on your pizza. The most expensive pizza in the world featured edible 24-carat flakes of gold and was called “Pizza Royale 007”. There’s no word on what the flakes tasted like, but it sold for about $3000, so you’d better save up if you want to try it for yourself.

If you’re bored of pepperoni but still want to have a protein packed slice of pizza, why not try scorpions? Yes, you read that right! At the 2014 Calgary Stampede, a food stand sold slices of scorpion pizza. The bizarre pizza topping turned out to be incredibly popular, and the stand sold out. Brave diners described the scorpions as crunchy.

If you prefer to choose pizza toppings without stingers, maybe you should try locusts on your pizza, instead of scorpions. After a town in Australia was infested with millions of locusts, the locals decided that eating them was a good pest control strategy, and put them on pizzas. Locusts are crunchy, like scorpions, and packed with protein, though you need to be brave to enjoy them.

For more familiar favorites, you can try the toppings at pizza places like Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. For the more adventurous eaters, the options for pizza toppings are only limited by their imaginations and their ability to travel.

Vending Machines And Your Employees’ Productivity

Even the most efficient employee can experience a slump in performance or accuracy if they miss a meal or are struggling with low energy.  A quick, healthy snack or convenient meal replacement will serve to strengthen both their mind and body and allow them to return to their normal level of output.  Below are two reasons why you should consider placing a vending machine with healthy food options in your business for your employees to enjoy.

Nutrient-Rich Foods Provide Longer Lasting Energy

Though many companies provide their employees with an easily accessible vending machine, these are often stocked with high calorie, low nutrition foods like candy bars and cookies that give workers nothing more than a temporary sugar high.  Placing a vending machine in your business that offers healthy, nutrient-rich foods can help increase the productivity and satisfaction of your employees and thereby increase the success of your company.  Since wholesome and healthy foods provide the body with the essential vitamins and nutrients it requires to work to its fullest potential, your employees will benefit from a sustained energy boost that comes from eating the right foods.  This not only increases their productivity but will help create healthier bodies and happier minds that are capable of fulfilling their daily responsibilities.

Healthy Food Options Contribute to the Health and Well-Being of Your Company

Every business struggles with the high cost of insurance and the stress of absent employees due to health-related issues.  These problems can decrease the overall efficiency and well-being of your company.  Providing your employees with healthy food options as opposed to higher calorie choices can contribute to their physical and mental health and may reduce the amount of sick days that are taken as well as the amount of money your company is required to pay for insurance purposes.  This can be especially beneficial if your company’s responsibilities require employees to sit for long periods of time behind a desk.  The combination of a more sedentary lifestyle and poor food choices is certain to create health risks and for employees in both the near and distant future.  You can decrease these risks by choosing to fill company vending machines with the foods that will help give your employees the nutrition they need to offset the hours of sitting.

Regardless of the type of business you run, your employees—and therefore your company—will benefit from the nutritious food options you provide daily in your vending machines. How To Save Money On Vacation By Choosing The Right Hotel

Vacations are a wonderful way for families to spend time together, but it’s undeniable that all of the little expenses really start to add up. To save money, it’s important to spend time looking for a good deal on a hotel reservation. One great way for families to save money is to stay in a hotel room with a mini-kitchen. By choosing this option, families can comfortably eat together and even cook light meals.

All hotels offer different amenities. For example, some provide a complimentary newspaper and some have indoor parking, but the truth is that a lot of these amenities don’t actually add that much value in terms of dollars and cents. The mini-kitchen, however, offers more than just convenience. Think about all the food that one family eats in one meal. Now multiply that by three meals a day. And multiply it again by how many days a vacation lasts. All that food can end up costing a fortune, especially if you include dessert, drinks, and snacks.

Mini-kitchens allow families to stock up on go-to foods like milk, juice, eggs, cereal, sandwiches, and ice cream, and they even allow families to cook simple meals.

  • In the morning, there’s nothing better than sipping fresh coffee and cooking up some eggs for breakfast. Everyone in the family can enjoy breakfast in bed, and not worry too much about making a mess.
  • If the hotel is in a convenient location, a quick stop off for lunch can allow people to kick off their shoes for a little while and eat a sandwich or salad, and load up their bags with snacks for the afternoon.
  • At night, people are often tired after a long day of activity. Instead of spending time choosing a restaurant that everyone agrees on and paying for the high cost of food, drink, taxes, and tip, families can whip up something in their own hotel room for a fraction of the price of a restaurant meal. They can just pop into a local grocery store and pick up basic ingredients like pasta, pre-made sauce, rice, or a few veggies to toss in the pan. Whether it’s mac-and-cheese or a stir-fry, parents will be able to make the right choices for their families. The best part is that a mini-kitchen will have everything you need to cook. Hotel mini-kitchens even come with dishwashers for easy clean-up.

A little preparation will go a long way in terms of saving money on vacation. Families want the best deals on airplane tickets and tickets for local attractions. Choosing the right hotel is also key to a happy vacation. Staying in a hotel with a mini-kitchen will help families eat great meals for less money, allowing them to simply focus on enjoying their time together.
