On Your Coastal Vacation, Enjoy Fresh Seafood At Area Restaurants

When you go on vacation to a beautiful mountainous area situated on a coastline, you have a splendid opportunity to enjoy fresh seafood and other local fare at area dining establishments. Just because you like to focus on eating healthy meals doesn’t mean you have to forego hearty lunches and dinners. Discover restaurants that use healthy cooking techniques and an abundance of fresh food, and make your dining experiences a wonderful and memorable part of your trip.

Salads

Many restaurants feature numerous salads on the menu, some of which are substantial enough to make an entire meal. A salad containing mixed fresh greens and other fresh vegetables, cheese, nuts and fruit is an example. A Greek salad with fresh veggies, olives and feta cheese is another. Consider adding fresh shrimp or grilled tuna to your plate for a seafood salad.

Of course, you can always have a smaller side salad and eat it before your main course.

Sandwiches

You might never have tried a buffalo burger or a fresh salmon burger before. When you find a restaurant with both those choices on the menu, you may want to go back a second time to sample the one you didn’t order the first time.

Buffalo is one of the leanest meats around, making it a healthy alternative to beef and pork. Heart-healthy salmon is rich in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

Dinners

If you’re ready for a relaxing, enjoyable evening with a glass of beer or wine and a fresh seafood dinner, head to a dining establishment featuring all these items.

The menu is likely to include the ever-popular grilled or broiled salmon, as well as other fish specialties, such as locally caught snapper cooked in a gourmet style. There may be a fresh seafood pasta dinner on the menu, such as linguine with a tomato-basil cream sauce blended with fish and shrimp.

If the menu has a bit of a Mediterranean flair, you can guess there may be some pizza listed there. You’ve no doubt seen shrimp on pizza menus many times before and may have even tried some. Usually the chefs add small salad shrimp. At a coastal restaurant characterized by fresh seafood offerings, however, your pizza will likely be topped with good-sized hand-peeled shrimp.

Future Nostalgia

You’ll always remember this vacation for the beautiful scenery and the amazing food you ate there. Perhaps one day you’ll go back and relive those memories — or maybe try some completely different menu items for a new adventure.

To enjoy healthy and hearty food, go to a restaurant like Riptide Marine Pub Grill & Catering.

What To Order When Visiting A Soul Food Restaurant

Soul food is a Southern US cuisine that is not very prevalent in Canada, yet there are a few restaurants that specialize in it. Since this is a culinary world that is not widely explored by most Canadians, it can be confusing when visiting this type of restaurant for the first time. Here are several soul food dishes that you should consider ordering during your first visit.

Fried Chicken

This is a dish that is prepared at restaurants all over the world, and each culture has given it their own unique spin. Even so, none of them can compare to what is offered at soul food restaurants. While most people season chicken, flour it, and cook it in hot oil, soul food restaurants tend to add an additional step. The chicken is soaked in buttermilk for several hours before frying. This tenderizes the chicken and gives the coating a crispy crunch that cannot be matched.

Collard Greens

When many people think of green, leafy vegetables, spinach is the first that comes to mind. There is nothing wrong with that, but collard greens definitely should not be overlooked. Every restaurant prepares them differently, but common ingredients added to the pot include vinegar, ham hocks, salt, hot peppers, and sugar. If you are seeking an authentic soul food meal, you must order this dish.

Hush Puppies

You have most likely heard of cornbread before, but did you know that some people out there fry it? Hush puppies are a soul food staple and you should definitely pick some up if you see them on the menu. Many hush puppies consist of plain cornmeal batter dropped in hot oil, but there are variations. Corn kernels, scallions, hot peppers and garlic are just a few items that some people stir into the mix.

Sweet Potato Pie

If there is enough room in your stomach after eating your meal and you want to have dessert, you would be remiss if you didn’t order a slice of sweet potato pie. While it may look visually similar to pumpkin pie, the taste is very different. The filling consists of sweet potatoes that have been mashed and combined with some combination of nutmeg, eggs, cinnamon, vanilla, sugar, and butter. It is a very sweet and filling way to end a meal.

As was mentioned earlier, there are not many soul food restaurants in Canada. This means that you should definitely enter if you come across one and you are looking for a new and exciting taste sensation. While there may be a myriad of items on the menu, you cannot go wrong if you order any of the items above. Don’t be afraid to try new restaurants, such as Alfa Greco Roman Cuisine.

The Many Benefits Of Dairy Delivery

Most people have gone through the unpleasant realization that they are out of milk. This can be quite frustrating if you’ve been looking forward to a glass of milk before bed or if you have a child hungry for a bowl of breakfast cereal. Having your milk delivered is one way to overcome this obstacle because you can order as much as your family needs. In addition to the convenience of always having milk on hand, there are other benefits to having your milk dropped off at your doorstep rather than purchasing it from a supermarket.

The Products are Fresh

The milk you get from a delivery service is as fresh as it gets aside from actually living on a farm. Usually, customers receive their milk less than 48 hours after the farmers have milked it from their cows. This just can’t happen at the supermarket because the milk must be bottled and shipped before it even hits store shelves. The same goes for other products many dairy farms offer, such as cheese and eggs. Dairy farms also bottle their milk in glass, which helps retain the taste when compared to milk that’s languished in plastic cartons for several days before being purchased.

The Milk Doesn’t Contain Hormones and Is Often More Nutritious

Most dairy farms don’t use growth hormones, such as recombinant bovine somatotropin or rBST. Many consumers are concerned about exposing their families to synthetic hormones, which always have the potential to cause negative health side effects. Choosing milk that doesn’t contain rBST also makes a statement that you care about cows. Cows given the hormone often develop udder infections, and choosing a milk delivery service is one way to do your part to protect animals. Local dairy farms can also use flash pasteurization, which kills any potential germs or bacteria, but also helps retain more of the nutrients naturally present in milk.

Milk Delivery is Eco-Friendly

Having your milk dropped at your doorstep is a small step that makes a big difference to the fragile planet. By choosing to get your milk from a local dairy farm, you’re helping cut down on the number of miles larger milk corporations drive and the number of gallons of gas they use to get milk onto store shelves. You also rinse out and return the glass bottles the milk is delivered in when you’re done drinking the milk. The bottles are then sanitized and reused. This cuts down on how many plastic bottles big dairy farms must use, as well as the number of resources necessary to recycle the milk bottles into new products.

You Support Small Businesses

Paying a local dairy farm to bring you fresh milk and other dairy foods gives money back to your community. By supporting local businesses, you’re funneling your money directly back into the city or town where you live. You’re also supporting farmers who often struggle to make ends meet when so many people rely on foods from supermarkets that have been shipped from all over the world.

Four Delicious Things You Can Do With Leftover Pizza

Did you order pizza delivery last night for dinner? If so, make sure you save the leftovers. Even if you aren’t a huge fan of eating cold leftover pizza for breakfast, there are several ways you can turn last night’s dinner into something delicious.

Make Pizza Waffles

If you can’t stomach cold pizza, heat it up. But, don’t heat your leftover pizza in the microwave—unless you like the taste of rubbery bread and cheese. Instead, use your waffle iron to make pizza-filled waffles.

  1. Place all of the pizza toppings in the top, left corner of the pizza slice.
  2. Fold the tip of the slice up to cover the toppings. The tip of your pizza slice should meet your top, left corner of your pizza.
  3. Cut off the excess crust—the right, top corner. (Don’t throw it out. You can use it to make breadcrumbs for another recipe.)
  4. Place the folded pizza into the waffle iron—there’s room for two pieces if you’d like more than one.
  5. Close the lid and turn the waffle iron on. Heat until you can open the lid of the waffle iron without the top of the pizza lifting up.

Leftover Pizza Casserole

If you have a lot of leftover pizza, enough to put two or three layers into a casserole dish, you can turn it into a leftover pizza casserole.

  1. Cut the crusts off of the pizza slices.
  2. Pour a thin layer of tomato sauce in the bottom of your casserole dish.
  3. Layer the pizza slices in the casserole dish—like you would layer lasagna noodles—with a layer of ricotta cheese between each layer.
  4. Top your casserole with sauce and mozzarella cheese.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

Pizza Salad

Finally, a salad even the pickiest kids will eat. The great news is, it’s also simple to make. Just cut your leftover pizza slices into small chunks. Then, mix the chunks of pizza with lettuce, cheese, and whatever veggies you want. Top your salad with Ranch or Italian dressing and it’s ready to serve.

Freeze Leftover Pizza Slices

Stop buying frozen pizzas or other frozen snacks. Instead freeze the leftovers from the nights that you order pizza delivery. Freeze each slice individually. Then, when someone in your family gets hungry, they can heat up a slice.

Even if you aren’t a huge fan of leftover pizza, you don’t have to let it go to waste. Get a little creative and try a few new recipes. You might find yourself ordering pizza delivery from places like All Hours Pizza & Donair more often so that you have leftovers to enjoy.

Ditch The Boring Date-Night Routine: 5 Unique Date Night Ideas For Married Couples

Are you stuck in a date night routine? If so, you aren’t alone. It’s a great idea for married couples, especially those with kids, to have a standing date night. However, if you choose the same type of dates over and over again, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut. If you’re ready to try something new, check out these five unique date night ideas.

Recreate Memorable Dates

Remember that hole-in-the-wall restaurant that you visited when you were dating? It may not have been the most romantic place in the world, but the quaint, local joint has meaning, so why not revisit it? Sit down with your spouse and make a list of your favorite dates. Then, work your way through the list reminiscing about old times. Alternatively, you can put a new spin on dates from your past. Instead of revisiting the restaurant you dined at on your first date, order takeout from the restaurant, buy a bottle of wine, and have a romantic picnic. Or try a restaurant neither of you have been before, like Lapiazza Restaurant Ltd.

Go Hiking

Who says date nights have to happen at night? There’s something wonderfully romantic about being alone together in the woods. Spend an afternoon exploring local hiking trails, bird watching, or use hiking as an excuse to get lost in the woods for a wild make-out session.

Tech Free Night

You don’t have to leave the house to have a wonderful date night, but you should steer clear of your electronics. Send the kids to the sitter’s house for the night, turn off your cell phones, laptops, tablets, and even the TV, and find something at home you can do together without technology. Try:

  • Cooking dinner together
  • Playing cards
  • Cuddling on the couch and talking
  • Taking a bubble bath together
  • Lying in your backyard and staring at the stars

Pretend You’re a Tourist

Tourists often see cities differently than people who live there. In fact, there is probably at least one local attraction that you’ve never seen—or at least haven’t seen in a long time. Take some time to visit places in your city that a tourist might visit, including:

  • Botanical gardens
  • Museums
  • Historic locations

Let Your Inner Child Loose

Skip the romantic dinner and a movie and really let loose. Visit a nearby amusement park or video arcade. Or, if you’re feeling really competitive play a round of miniature golf, laser tag, or paintball.

Don’t get stuck in a date-night rut; there are plenty of creative date-night ideas out there that can really bring the fun back to your marriage.

Everything You Need To Know About Pizza

Pizza is one of the most popular foods with 93% of Americans having at least a slice per month, and 350 slices eaten every second. There are many different types and brands of pizza, but when did it all start? Take a trip through the history of pizza and find out everything you ever wanted, and didn’t want, to know about pizza.

The Beginning

The first record of pizza was written during the 6th Century B.C. when Darius the Great mentions his soldiers making an early version of this popular meal. During their conquests, soldiers would bake flat bread on their shield and put cheese and dates on it.

The pizza grew in popularity through Greece and Italy at first, and then spread through Europe. Naples grew to become the epicenter of the pizza world and by 1889 the great pizza chef, Raffaele Esposito created the pizza that would stay the standard for all the creations coming after.

In the early 1900s the first Italian pizza entered the United States in Chicago and New York. The two cities have their own unique twist on the dish and have been battling out who has the best version ever since. As pizza grew in popularity, it spread to many major cities and then eventually to almost every home in America.

Fun Facts About Pizza

The World’s Biggest Pizza weighed in at 51,000 pounds and was made by five Italian Chefs. It was 131 feet in diameter and required 10,000 pounds of tomato sauce, 8,800 pound of mozzarella cheese, and 19,800 pounds of flour.

Los Angeles is home to the largest commercially available pizza, according to Guinness which is 54 x 54 inches, and serves up 200 pieces of this pie. Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizzeria serves up this pie for $199.99 with an additional $14.99 charge for each additional topping.

The most expensive pizza on record was sold at a charity auction for £2,150, or $3,497.10. It had exotic toppings like Scottish smoked salmon, sunblush-tomato sauce, cognac marinated lobster, caviar soaked in champagne, and even edible gold. The most expensive pizza that is available for the public to order is $1,000 and in New York City. It is 12-inches of pizza with caviar, lobster, chives, and cremefraiche.

Other fun facts about pizza are that October is National Pizza Month in the United States and this industry is worth over $30 billion. The week of the Super Bowl is the most popular time to order this meal too.

While every country may have their own form of this delicious creation, the popularity is the same. The next time you sit down to eat a slice of pizza, you will have a greater appreciation for this simple dish that has seen many changes, and revolutionized the world of eating.
